I will give a summary of the theory of automorphisms of handlebodies. The emphasis is on dual pairs of invariant laminations (of dimensions 1 and 2) associated to irreducible automorphisms, but l will also give an introduction and background, including a description of reducing surfaces. I will discuss a recent result due to Leonardo Carvalho, which characterizes those pairs of invariant laminations which realize the minimum growth rate.
