Decoupling is a recent development in Fourier analysis which has had several striking applications, both in analytic number theory and in Fourier analysis/PDE. In this survey talk, I will introduce the question, and say a little about some applications. Then I will discuss the difficulties of the problem and some of the ideas of the proof.
